how it all began..

It all began with a phone call to my estranged father.

My parents had separated when I was very young, and my Dad left London and moved to Sydney. It wasn’t until I reached the ripe old age of 20 that I came to Australia to get to know him.

Soon after I arrived, I got a job as a runner for a Film Production company ‘Fontana Films”. Having never had the opportunity to work in film & TV before, I was engrossed in the whole process. We used to work very long hours and often slept in the studio, scrapping sets overnight and building new ones for the next day’s shoot.

My interest in imagery and lighting began to develop, and for my 21st birthday, my father gave me an Olympus SLR. It was an expensive hobby in those days to learn from your mistakes, and you had to wait for days to get your film back from the chemist. Nevertheless, I would go and shoot everything from dawn shots at Palm Beach to nude girlfriends, when finances allowed - and models permitted.

I began to follow opportunities that took me away from the studio and into Post-Production, culminating in a 12-year stint as an Editor for Channel Nine’s “60 Minutes” programme. I then became a freelance editor and worked on various content, including documentaries, main-stream and reality TV shows, and an intriguing but short stint on an extraordinary personal documentary with the actor Val Kilmer.

So to now, and I find myself living in Sydney’s beautiful Pittwater in a boat only access property that leaves me no shortage of inspiration for Photography or Videography. Advances in digital technology make high-quality video production now possible without the million-dollar edit suite we used back in my 60 Minutes days, and I can send it all to my client in minutes down the fabulous interweb.

Whilst a relative newcomer to professional Photography, I find all forms of portraiture especially rewarding. Even a corporate portrait can tell a story. Simultaneously, the extremes of formats such as Boudoir allow for broad creativity using available or artificial lighting. I also enjoy the technical aspects of architectural, real estate and abstract Photography.

For me, there is a continuous fascination in finding new and original ways to capture imagery and light and make subjects “pop”. Often the hardest part for me is putting the camera down.

Whatever your project involves, I’ll look forward to the creative challenge you bring.

Cheers,

Sean
